The Midnight turned a love of 1980s soundtracks, saxophone solos and neon-lit nostalgia into one of the most passionate fan bases in modern alternative music. The duo of singer-songwriter Tyler Lyle and producer Tim McEwan write synthwave with real songs at its heart: stories about youth, memory, love and loss that land as hard as any rock anthem.
| Formed | 2012, Los Angeles |
| Members | Tyler Lyle (vocals, guitar), Tim McEwan (production, synths) |
| Genres | Synthwave, synth-pop, electronic rock |
| Breakthrough | Endless Summer (2016) |
Tyler Lyle, a singer-songwriter originally from Georgia, and producer Tim McEwan met through a songwriting session in Los Angeles. They bonded over 1980s film scores and pop, and decided to build a project around that sound. The name reflects the late-night, cinematic mood they wanted.
Their debut EP, already showing their mix of retro synths and heartfelt songwriting.
The record that defined their sound and built their fan base, with “Sunset” and the title track among the songs fans still shout back at every show.
Nocturnal leaned into late-night atmosphere, and Kids was a concept album about childhood and growing up, featuring “America 2” and “Lost Boy.”
Monsters was darker and more guitar-driven, about adolescence and its troubles. Heroes answered it with big, optimistic anthems.
The duo has kept releasing new music since. Their single “Chariot” is on our August Synth-Pop Top 20 and Electronic Rock Top 20.
Lyle brings a folk singer’s storytelling, while McEwan’s production references everything from Tears for Fears to John Carpenter scores. Live, they play with a full band, including saxophone, which turns their shows into communal sing-alongs.
The Midnight are touring the United States this fall, with dates running through mid-October 2026. Check our upcoming alternative concerts guide for the current list, and confirm details on their official website before buying tickets.
The Midnight helped take synthwave from an online niche to a touring force and showed that nostalgia-driven electronic music could carry real emotional weight. They sit naturally between M83, Future Islands and classic Depeche Mode in our programming.
M83, Future Islands, Gunship, FM-84, Timecop1983, CHVRCHES and New Arcades.
