No band did more to move alternative rock from college radio to the center of popular culture than Nirvana. In barely seven years together, Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl made three studio albums, one of the most celebrated live records ever released, and a single that redrew the map of 1990s rock. More than three decades later, their songs are still among the most requested on alternative radio.
| Formed | 1987, Aberdeen, Washington |

| Genres | Grunge, alternative rock, punk rock |
| Labels | Sub Pop, DGC |
| Studio albums | Bleach (1989), Nevermind (1991), In Utero (1993) |
| Active | 1987β1994 |
Cobain and Novoselic met in Aberdeen, a logging town two hours from Seattle, through a shared love of punk rock and the Melvins. They formed Nirvana in 1987 and went through several drummers, including Aaron Burckhard, Dale Crover and Chad Channing, while building a following in the Olympia and Seattle club scenes.
Seattle label Sub Pop released their debut single, a cover of Shocking Blue’s “Love Buzz,” in 1988, followed by the album Bleach in 1989. Recorded for about $600 with producer Jack Endino, Bleach was heavy and abrasive, but songs like “About a Girl” already showed Cobain’s gift for Beatles-sized melody.
In 1990, Dave Grohl, a powerhouse drummer from the Washington, D.C. hardcore band Scream, joined. The classic lineup was complete, and major labels were circling. Nirvana signed with DGC, a Geffen imprint, on the advice of Sonic Youth.
Nevermind, produced by Butch Vig and released in September 1991, was expected to sell a few hundred thousand copies. Instead, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” exploded on MTV and radio, and in January 1992 the album replaced Michael Jackson’s Dangerous at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It has since sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.
The success put an unwilling spotlight on Cobain and on the whole Seattle scene. Labels rushed to sign anything with distorted guitars, and “grunge” became a household word. Our deep dive into grunge explains how that happened.
Sludgy, Melvins-influenced and recorded on a shoestring for Sub Pop.
Start with: “About a Girl,” “School,” “Negative Creep,” “Love Buzz,” “Blew.”
Pop hooks, punk energy and Vig’s punchy production. Few rock albums have aged as well.
Start with: “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come as You Are,” “Lithium,” “In Bloom,” “Drain You,” “Breed.”
Cobain recruited Steve Albini to make a rawer, less polished follow-up. The result is harsher and more personal, and many fans consider it the band’s best work.
Start with: “Heart-Shaped Box,” “All Apologies,” “Dumb,” “Pennyroyal Tea,” “Serve the Servants.”
The 1992 compilation Incesticide collects early singles, B-sides and BBC sessions and is worth hearing once you know the main albums.
Recorded in November 1993 and released a year later, Unplugged stripped the songs down and leaned into covers of artists Cobain admired, including David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World,” three Meat Puppets songs and Lead Belly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night.” It won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance and is often ranked among the greatest live albums ever made.
Kurt Cobain died in April 1994 at the age of 27, and Nirvana ended with him. Grohl went on to form Foo Fighters and became one of rock’s most visible ambassadors. Novoselic turned to other bands and to political activism. Touring guitarist Pat Smear later joined Foo Fighters as well.
Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, its first year of eligibility.
Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, the Pixies, Sonic Youth, the Melvins and The Smashing Pumpkins.
In 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington.
The best-known lineup was Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. Earlier drummers included Aaron Burckhard, Dale Crover, Dave Foster and Chad Channing, and Pat Smear played second guitar on the band’s final tours.
Nevermind (1991), which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.
Both. Nirvana is the best-known grunge band, but Cobain considered punk rock his foundation, and the band’s sound blends punk speed with metal weight and pop melody.
Nirvana is a cornerstone of our Where Modern Rock Meets Grunge show, where “Lithium” and “Drain You” sit next to the newer bands they inspired.
