Soundgarden were there first. Formed years before grunge had a name, they were the first band from the Seattle scene to sign to a major label, and they pushed the sound into its heaviest and most adventurous territory. With Chris Cornell’s four-octave voice and Kim Thayil’s strange, menacing guitar, they made heavy music that rewarded close listening.
| Formed | 1984, Seattle, Washington |
| Classic lineup | Chris Cornell (vocals, guitar), Kim Thayil (guitar), Ben Shepherd (bass), Matt Cameron (drums) |
| Founding bassist | Hiro Yamamoto |
| Genres | Grunge, alternative metal, hard rock |
| Breakthrough | Badmotorfinger (1991), Superunknown (1994) |
Cornell, Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto formed Soundgarden in 1984, naming the band after a wind-driven pipe sculpture in a Seattle park. Cornell originally sang and played drums until Matt Cameron, from local band Skin Yard, joined in 1986.
Their early singles and EPs on Sub Pop, including Screaming Life (1987) and Fopp (1988), helped define the label’s sound. The full-length Ultramega OK (1988) came out on punk label SST and earned a Grammy nomination, and the band then signed with A&M, making them the first of the Seattle bands on a major label.
Raw and punky, with flashes of the band’s Sabbath and Led Zeppelin roots. Try “Flower” and “All Your Lies.”
Their major-label debut and a heavier, sludgier record. “Hands All Over” and “Loud Love” are the standouts. Hiro Yamamoto left after this album; Ben Shepherd joined in 1990.
The breakthrough. Released a few weeks after Nevermind, it combined drop-tuned riffs and unusual time signatures with real hooks. “Outshined,” “Rusty Cage” and “Jesus Christ Pose” became alternative radio staples. Johnny Cash later covered “Rusty Cage.”
Soundgarden’s masterpiece debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Darker, more psychedelic and more melodic, it produced “Black Hole Sun,” “Spoonman,” “Fell on Black Days” and “The Day I Tried to Live.” “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman” each won a Grammy.
Looser and more varied, with “Pretty Noose,” “Burden in My Hand” and “Blow Up the Outside World.” Creative tension during the album’s tour led to the band splitting in 1997.
After reuniting in 2010, the band released this strong comeback album, led by “Been Away Too Long.”
Cornell’s voice could move from a low croon to a piercing scream within a single line, and he wrote with a poet’s ear for imagery. Beyond Soundgarden, he led Temple of the Dog, fronted Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine, and recorded solo albums and film songs, including the James Bond theme “You Know My Name” (2006). He died in May 2017, ending Soundgarden as an active band.
Thayil rarely played conventional solos. Instead he used odd tunings, Eastern-influenced scales and controlled noise to make riffs that sound slightly off-kilter in the best way. Listen to “Searching with My Good Eye Closed” or “Head Down” to hear how different Soundgarden were from standard hard rock.
Soundgarden showed that a band could be heavy, technical and intelligent and still top the charts. Their influence runs through alternative metal and stoner rock and through bands like Queens of the Stone Age and Royal Blood. In 2025, Soundgarden were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
