Yeah Yeah Yeahs were the wildest band of the early-2000s New York scene. Karen O’s unpredictable stage presence, Nick Zinner’s jagged guitar and Brian Chase’s precise drumming made them thrilling live and endlessly inventive on record. From art-punk chaos to the dance floor and back, they have rarely made the same album twice.
| Formed | 2000, New York City |
| Members | Karen O (vocals), Nick Zinner (guitar, keyboards), Brian Chase (drums) |
| Genres | Indie rock, art punk, garage rock revival, synth-pop |
| Breakthrough | Fever to Tell (2003) |
Karen O and Nick Zinner met in New York and formed a duo before adding drummer Brian Chase. Opening for The Strokes and The White Stripes, they quickly built a reputation as one of the city’s most exciting live bands. Their self-titled 2001 EP, recorded with no bass player, made the most of their raw, minimal sound.
Noisy, sexy and chaotic, with one big exception: “Maps,” a heartfelt love song that became an alternative radio classic and one of the decade’s defining tracks. “Date with the Night” and “Y Control” capture their art-punk energy.
More layered and acoustic-tinged, featuring “Gold Lion” and “Cheated Hearts.”
The band swapped many guitars for synthesizers and made a dance-rock classic. “Zero” and “Heads Will Roll” became huge hits, and the album earned a Grammy nomination.
Eclectic and experimental, with “Sacrilege” and its gospel choir.
After nine years away, the band returned with a lush, synth-heavy album. “Spitting Off the Edge of the World,” featuring Perfume Genius, is one of their most powerful songs.
Karen O is one of rock’s great frontwomen: fearless, theatrical and emotionally raw. Beyond the band, she wrote the Oscar-nominated “The Moon Song” for the film Her and the soundtrack for Where the Wild Things Are, and has collaborated with Danger Mouse.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs showed a generation of musicians, and especially young women in rock, that there was no single right way to front a band. Their move from garage punk to synth-pop also previewed how freely alternative music would cross genres in the 2010s. In 2022, a viral remix of “Heads Will Roll” introduced the band to a whole new audience.
The Strokes, Interpol, Metric, Le Tigre, Florence + The Machine, Wet Leg and The Kills.
