“Indie” started as a business description. It meant a record released on an independent label instead of a major one. Over forty years it became a sound, a scene, a fashion and finally a genre heard on festival main stages around the world. This is how indie rock evolved, and why it still matters.
Indie rock is guitar-based alternative music that values independence, originality and personality over commercial polish. It covers jangly guitar pop, lo-fi bedroom recordings, art-rock, post-punk revival and much more. Today many “indie” bands are on major labels; the word now describes an attitude and sound as much as a business model.
Punk proved in the late 1970s that anyone could form a band, press a single and sell it at gigs. That idea is the foundation of indie.
Bands like Joy Division, Wire and Gang of Four used punk’s freedom to experiment, and independent labels such as Rough Trade, Factory and Mute gave them a home.
In the U.S., student-run radio stations created a national audience for independent bands. Read our history of college rock.
Jangly guitars, cryptic lyrics and relentless touring made the Athens band the model for American indie success.
On Rough Trade, Johnny Marr’s guitar and Morrissey’s lyrics defined British indie for a generation.
Alternate tunings and noise made Sonic Youth the godparents of experimental indie, and they later helped bring Nirvana to a major label.
Loud-quiet dynamics and surreal lyrics influenced nearly every alternative band of the 1990s.
After Nirvana went to No. 1, major labels signed indie bands in bulk. Some, such as Pavement, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Guided by Voices and Neutral Milk Hotel, stayed proudly lo-fi and independent-minded, building the template for later indie rock. In Britain, indie bands led Britpop.
Is This It (2001) made guitar rock cool again. Read our Strokes profile.
New York’s post-punk revival continued with Interpol‘s dark elegance and Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ art-punk energy.
Arcade Fire’s Funeral (2004) brought orchestral grandeur to indie, while Death Cab for Cutie and Modest Mouse crossed into the mainstream.
Arctic Monkeys built a fan base online before releasing the fastest-selling debut album in British chart history in 2006. Music blogs and MySpace became the new college radio.
Since the 2010s, streaming playlists and social media have made it possible for independent artists to reach global audiences directly. Indie now blends with synth-pop, folk, R&B and electronic music. The National, The 1975, Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski, Wolf Alice and Fontaines D.C. show how wide the word has become. Our monthly Indie Rock Top 20 tracks today’s highlights.
